Let’s chat about the Oscars looks. As there are so many, I’m only rating women (tuxedos are boring) and ones I’ve heard of, unless I either really love or hate the look (and only if there aren’t too many).
Those in bold are my personal favourites.
Keltie Knight (Presenter) in Paolo Sebastian

I’ve never heard of Ms. Knight, but I was immediately drawn to this gorgeous dress. This off-white, tea-length gown screams Old Hollywood. I particularly love the fluffy skirt and sequins, which aren’t too plentiful and so add to the look. Paolo Sebastian is such an incredible designer.
Sarah Rating: Yes!
Amelia Dimoldenberg (presenter) in Versace

Ill-fitted and the cut out just doesn’t work. Nice colour on her though.
Sarah Rating: No!
Julianne Hough (Footloose, Rock of Ages and Grease Live) in Christian Dior

I get what Ms. Hough is trying to do, but I just don’t think it works. The sheer material takes away from the Old Hollywood vibe, though I love the hair and makeup.
Sarah Rating: No
Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God, CODA and The Player)

Ms. Matlin looks graceful, but I’m not in love with the dress. Still, black suits her and her jewellery is tasteful.
Sarah Rating: Meh
Ariana Grande (Wicked, Don’t Look Up and Hairspray Live) in Schiaparelli

Am I absolutely in love with that pink tulle at the bottom? Absolutely. Do I love the rest of it? No. It’s two different dresses put together, which I’m not a fan of. I prefer the dress she wore for the Wicked medley.
Sarah Rating: Meh
Emily Mortimer (Shutter Island, Hugo and Mary Poppins Returns)

The necklace is pretty. That’s the only nice thing that I have to say about this look.
Sarah Rating: No!
Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown, The Neon Demon and Maleficent) in Givenchy

The dress itself is super pretty, and I love the lace look. Huzzah!
Sarah Rating: Yes!
Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Us and A Quiet Place) in Chanel

Do I like the dress? No. Do I think Ms. Nyong’o is absolutely stunning? Yes. The gown would look much nicer without that corset.
Sarah Rating: No
Cynthia Erivo (Wicked, Harriet and Bad Times at the El Royale) in Louis Vuitton

I admire Ms. Erivo’s boldness but I’m just not a fan of the dress. It’s far too much, though I give credit to her for wearing something very Elphaba.
Sarah Rating: No
Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez, Avatar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe) in Yves Saint Laurent

The colour really suits Ms. Saldaña but the dress is not it. There’s too much going on and the materials don’t suit each other.
Sarah Rating: No
Demi Moore (The Substance, A Few Good Men and Indecent Proposal) in Armani Privé

On paper, it’s not my kind of dress. That being said, I actually really like it. It’s super ornate and different. Ms. Moore also looks gorgeous.
Sarah Rating: Yes
Selena Gomez (Emelia Pérez, The Dead Don’t Tie and Another Cinderella Story) in Ralph Lauren

I’d like the dress if it wasn’t for the material, which just spoiled it. Her hair and makeup is nice though.
Sarah Rating: Meh
Raye (singer) in Vivienne Westwood

I love this! A beautiful colour on her, a gorgeous dress in general and I love the necklace.
Sarah Rating: Yes!
Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Crazy Rich Asians and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)

A gorgeous, simple gown with a rich blue colour and train. I adore it.
Sarah Rating: Yes!
Mikey Madison (Anora, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Scream) in Christian Dior

I don’t love the black top, but the rest is very classic Dior. Nice colour and the bow is a lovely touch.
Sarah Rating: Yes
Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie, The Last Song and LOL) in Alexander McQueen

I give Ms. Cyrus credit for always sticking to her look, but I’m not a fan of this. The materials are too different and it’s all over the place.
Sarah Rating: No
Margaret Qualley (The Substance, Poor Things and The Nice Guys) in Chanel

I adore the backless look, and the dress in general, but I think a lower neckline would have been better. Overall, I like it.
Sarah Rating: Yes
Lily-Rose Depp (Nosferatu, The King and Voyagers) in Chanel

I appreciate the gothic nod to Nosferatu but I’m not a fan at all. Too sheer and the material looks cheap for Chanel.
Sarah Rating: No!
Felicity Jones (The Brutalist, On The Basis of Sex and The Theory of Everything) in Armani Privé

It’s a straight no from me. It doesn’t look like it’s fitted correctly and that knocks it down a lot.
Sarah Rating: No
Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, Top Gun: Maverick and The Cathedral) in Christian Dior

The pink satin plays to my taste, but I don’t love the top part- I think it cheapens it.
Sarah Rating: No
Isabella Rossellini (Conclave, Blue Velvet and Infamous) in Dolce and Gabbana

I don’t love the dress, but is a blue velvet tribute to the late, great David Lynch so that throws points on.
Sarah Rating: Meh
Emma Stone (The Favourite, Poor Things and Crazy, Stupid Love) in Louis Vuitton

I’ll always rate Ms. Stone as an actress but I’m not feeling this look as it is badly shaped on her.
Sarah Rating: Meh
Meg Ryan (Top Gun, You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle) in Ashi Studio

The dress is fine, though I’ve never been partial to a straight neckline. Colour works very well on her.
Sarah Rating: Yes
Penélope Cruz (Nine, Ferrari and Murder on the Orient Express) in Chanel

Not a fan at all. It looks as though the dress was just tacked together at the last minute.
Sarah Rating: No
Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball, Die Another Day and John Wick 3)

I don’t love the dress, but I don’t hate it either. Halle Berry is gorgeous though.
Sarah Rating: Meh
Scarlett Johansson (Lost In Translation, Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit) in Thierry Mugler

This ages her. Sorry.
Sarah Rating: No
Rachel Zegler (Hunger Games: A Ballad of Song Birds and Snakes, West Side Story and Shazam! 2)

Too sheer for my taste, though the bottom is magical. It needs pulling up too.
Sarah Rating: No
Goldie Hawn (Overboard, Private Benjamin and Death Becomes Her) in Dolce and Gabbana

I give her points for pulling off yellow, which is hard to do, but the dress does nothing for me. Nice wrap though.
Sarah Rating: Meh
Ana de Armas (Blonde, No Time To Die and Knives Out)

Don’t love the halter but the dress itself is very classy indeed.
Sarah Rating: Yes
Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost, The Colour Purple and Sister Act) in Christian Siriano

It’s a no from me. Just far too much.
Sarah Rating: No!
